Porcelain and Stone

Tulla Stables Studios, Co. Clare, Ireland.

‘Using the original cobblestones dug from the site during renovation, Kathleen created 191 white porcelain replicas to mark each year from the opening of the original stables in 1817 to the present day. On the day of the exhibition (March 29, 2008), the artist stacked the old and the new stones into a cairn, marking the spot in the studio where the originals were removed. In contrast to tradition, this cairn decreased in scale throughout the day as visitors were invited to a porcelain cobblestone away, carrying with them a symbol of the past and present.’

A temporary work of public art, commissioned by The Clare Arts Office. This project was created in recognition of the transformation of the Old Tulla Stables in Co. Clare into Artists Studios in 2006.
